Top Things You MUST Know Before Going to Barbados 🇧🇧
Thinking of heading to the stunning Caribbean island of Barbados? 🏝️ I recently celebrated my birthday there on a solo trip, and let me tell you — it was amazing. From the friendliness of the locals to the ease of getting around, Barbados is the kind of destination that makes travel feel easy, safe, and fun.
But before you go, there are a few things you’ll definitely want to know so you can make the most of your trip. Here are the top 5 things to know before traveling to Barbados 👇
If you'd like this information in a video, watch my YouTube video below.
1. The Tap Water is Safe to Drink
This one is huge. Unlike many destinations where bottled water is a must, the tap water in Barbados is completely safe to drink. That’s because it’s naturally filtered through coral aquifers and then treated to meet World Health Organization standards.
Why this is amazing:
You’ll save 💵 by not buying bottled water.
You don’t have to stress about brushing your teeth or swallowing water in the shower.
You can enjoy fresh fruit, veggies, and drinks with ice cubes without worry.
It’s a small thing that makes a big difference when traveling.
2. Prices Are Similar to the U.S.
Barbados is not a budget destination — so be prepared. Hotels, excursions, food, and taxis can all add up quickly. Since much is imported, prices often match (or even exceed) what you’d pay in the U.S.
💡 On average, I spent about $500 a day on hotels, food, transportation, and activities. That’s steep, but pretty consistent with what other travelers report.
So, plan your budget accordingly. Barbados is worth every penny, but it’s good to know what you’re getting into.
3. Take the Bus Instead of Taxis
Here’s one way to save some money: skip the pricey taxis and take the public bus.
The fare is just $1.75 USD — a total bargain.
Buses (actually vans with a burgundy stripe!) run constantly. I never had to wait more than a minute or two.
It’s convenient, safe, and a great way to see more of the island.
At first, the white-van “buses” threw me off 😅, but once I realized that’s just how things are done in Barbados, I actually loved it.
4. It’s Super Safe — Even for Solo Travelers
As a woman traveling solo, feeling safe is always top of mind. Barbados exceeded my expectations.
I walked around Bridgetown and local neighborhoods without issues.
I took the bus at night to the famous Oistins Fish Fry (highly recommend!) and felt totally comfortable.
Locals were kind, welcoming, and helpful.
Not only is Barbados safe, but it also has a warmth that makes you feel right at home. And fun fact: when people found out it was my birthday, they kept offering me little freebies — it almost felt like a law! 🎉
5. Barbados is the Birthplace of Rum
Last but definitely not least: Barbados is where rum was born.
The world’s oldest rum distillery, Mount Gay, has been crafting rum since the 1700s. You can tour the distillery in Bridgetown, sample their famous blends, and even bring a bottle home as a souvenir.
Other local distilleries worth checking out:
Foursquare
WIRD (West Indies Rum Distillery)
St. Nicholas Abbey
If you’re a rum lover (or even just curious), you can’t leave Barbados without a tasting.
Final Thoughts
Barbados is a dream Caribbean destination with turquoise waters, friendly locals, and an easygoing vibe. Knowing a few tips before you go — like the safe tap water, higher costs, cheap buses, safety for solo travelers, and its rum legacy — will help you plan smarter and enjoy more.
So, pack your bags, budget wisely, and get ready to sip some rum in paradise. 🏝️🍹
