Top 10 Things to do in Phuket, Thailand
Phuket, Thailand is one of Southeast Asia’s top travel destinations — and for good reason! This tropical island is the perfect mix of relaxing beaches, vibrant culture, and exciting activities. From spiritual landmarks to buzzing nightlife, you’ll never run out of things to do here.
During my trip, I packed in plenty of adventure, and today I’m sharing the 10 best things to do in Phuket to help you plan your own unforgettable visit.

1. Visit Big Buddha
One of Phuket’s most famous landmarks is Big Buddha, a massive 148-foot-tall statue sitting high on a hill in the southern part of the island. At 1,300 feet above sea level, the views from here are just as stunning as the statue itself.
👉 Since Big Buddha is a temple, you’ll need to dress modestly (shoulders covered, knee-length clothing). Don’t worry if you forget — sarongs are available at the entrance.
Walking around the temple grounds, you’ll find beautiful statues, offerings, and even peaceful meditation areas inside. Best of all? Entry is completely free.
2. Hike to Big Buddha
While most visitors take a cab, hiking up to Big Buddha is an adventure all on its own. I started at Karon Beach early in the morning and followed the trail through town and into the forest.
Be warned — it’s a steep, challenging hike with ropes to help at the hardest parts. But along the way, you’ll find spots to rest and enjoy gorgeous views.
💡 Pro tip: Start early before the sun gets too hot!
3. Treat Yourself to a Thai Massage
After a hike, there’s no better reward than a traditional Thai massage 💆🏽♀️. Spa services in Thailand are incredibly affordable compared to the U.S. — about $10 for a one-hour massage.
I also tried a pedicure, and while the setup was simple (think bowls of water instead of fancy spa chairs), the results were amazing. My gel pedicure lasted for months!
4. Try Water Activities at Patong Beach
Patong Beach is Phuket’s most famous beach — buzzing with tourists and packed with activities.
Here you can:
Jet ski across the bay 🚤
Parasail high above the water 🪂
Or simply enjoy people-watching
Just remember: haggle for prices. Bargaining is standard practice here, whether you’re booking a beach activity, catching a cab, or shopping.
5. Experience Nightlife on Bangla Road
When the sun sets, head to Bangla Road in Patong. Think of it as Phuket’s mini version of the Las Vegas Strip — filled with neon lights, nightclubs, bars, and performers.
It’s definitely more adult-oriented, so expect an overwhelming but unforgettable experience. Even if nightlife isn’t your thing, it’s worth a quick visit just to see it in action.
6. Ride in a Tuk Tuk
Forget boring taxis — in Phuket, you can ride in a tuk tuk 🚕🎶, the party bus version of a cab. These open-air vehicles are decked out with neon lights and booming speakers.
The best part? You can connect your phone to the speakers and play your own music while cruising the streets with the ocean breeze in your hair. Pure fun!
7. Relax at a Calmer Beach
Patong Beach is lively, but Phuket also has plenty of quieter beaches where you can truly unwind.
I loved Surin Beach, which was peaceful and less crowded. Depending on where you stay, other great options include Kata Beach, Kamala Beach, or Bang Tao Beach.
8. Take a Day Trip to the Phi Phi Islands
One of the highlights of my trip was a day trip to the Phi Phi Islands. Our tour started with a 5:30 AM hotel pickup, followed by a speedboat ride to stunning destinations like:
Maya Bay (famous from Leonardo DiCaprio’s The Beach)
Monkey Beach 🐒
Snorkeling spots full of marine life 🐠
A relaxing final beach stop
It’s a full day of adventure and absolutely worth adding to your itinerary.
9. Stay at a Luxury Resort
Phuket is the perfect place to indulge in luxury without breaking the bank. I stayed at the Twinpalms Resort, a 5-star property that cost less than $150 per night.
Highlights included:
A gorgeous pool kept at the perfect temperature 🏊♀️
Spacious rooms with massive beds
Free daily breakfast with tons of delicious options (yes, even cocktails 🍹)
Compared to resorts elsewhere in the world, the value is unbeatable.
10. Enjoy Thai Food & Beer
Last but definitely not least, don’t leave Phuket without sampling the local food and drinks.
I had the best Pad Thai of my life at a roadside restaurant for just $5, and I loved sipping on Chang Beer, Thailand’s most popular lager.
Simple, authentic, and delicious!
