Lufthansa Business Class Review: Frankfurt to Detroit ✈️
Welcome to business class on Lufthansa Airlines. On this 9-hour flight from Frankfurt to Detroit, I experienced champagne, gourmet meals, and more chocolate than I could possibly eat. But what truly shocked me happened near the very end of the flight when the flight attendant spoiled me with a series of rare and unexpected gifts. I’ve seriously never had this happen to me on a flight before!
In this Lufthansa business class review, I’m breaking down the experience the same way I do in all my premium cabin reviews: by rating the seat, the food, and the service, and then averaging those scores to give an overall rating. I’ll also share exactly how much I paid for this flight using credit card points so you can decide whether Lufthansa business class is worth it.
Spoiler alert: I always enjoy reviewing business class flights, but this one was genuinely something special. I highly recommend watching my YouTube video below for the full effect:
Let’s get into it.
The Seat 💺
Let’s start with the seat, and fair warning, this is where Lufthansa business class struggles.
On this aircraft, the business class cabin is configured in a 2-2-2 layout, meaning there are no single seats by the window and no direct aisle access for every passenger. Lufthansa does have newer business class seats with a 1-2-1 configuration on some aircraft, but my flight featured the older product.
That said, the aircraft itself felt fairly new. The cabin was clean, bright, and well maintained. However, the lack of privacy is impossible to ignore. There’s no divider between seats, so you can see everyone around you and they can see you.
I sat in window seat 12A and got lucky by not having a seatmate, which made a huge difference. On the seat were a pillow and blanket, and in front of me was a water bottle, the entertainment screen, a coat hook, and the footwell. The amenity kit was also placed at the seat and had the standard items inside.
Headphones were located on the left-hand side, while the right-hand side housed the seat controls, tray table, charging outlets, reading light, and the entertainment remote. The remote had a very old-school design, using a small trackball to move a cursor on the screen. It definitely took some getting used to.
Storage was minimal. Aside from the floor, there was essentially nowhere to place personal items.
When upright or slightly reclined, the seat was perfectly comfortable. Unfortunately, once converted into lie-flat mode, it became surprisingly uncomfortable. My hips and lower back started hurting, and the narrow seat and footwell limited me to one sleeping position. As a result, I barely slept at all on this flight.
Overall, I’m rating the Lufthansa business class seat a 2.5 out of 5. Between the uncomfortable bed, lack of privacy, limited storage, and no direct aisle access, this seat was a major drawback.
We’re not off to a great start, but trust me, it only gets better from here.
The Food 🍽️
Next up is the food, which is usually what I look forward to most when flying business class, and Lufthansa did not disappoint.
This was a daytime flight, and I was served two full meals.
For the first meal, I started with the tuna tataki appetizer served with pineapple jelly, olive oil “caviar,” and saffron mayonnaise. The tuna was absolutely delicious, although I did momentarily think the olive oil caviar was real caviar. I guess I’ll keep dreaming. 😉
The appetizer was served with a green salad and not one, but two pieces of bread.
For the main course, I chose the roasted potato and mushroom roulade with vegetables. This was the only option that fit my dietary restrictions, and while the description didn’t excite me, it ended up tasting much better than expected.
For dessert, I opted for the fresh fruit, which was simple but very good.
Before landing, we were served the second meal. This is typically where airlines disappoint me. Lufthansa, however, delivered again. I ordered the Tomatino salmon loin with balsamic, lentils, and basil. It came with a yogurt and fruit bowl, a pretzel, and a glass of red wine.
Both meals were satisfying, well-portioned, and thoughtfully prepared. There was decent variety, and I genuinely don’t have any major complaints.
I’m giving the food a perfect 5 out of 5: about as good as you can reasonably expect on a 9-hour business class flight.
The Service 🌟
Last but absolutely not least is the service, and this is where Lufthansa truly shines.
From start to finish, every crew member was professional, warm, and attentive. They made the experience feel more like staying at a five-star hotel or dining at a Michelin-star restaurant than flying on an airplane.
Even small details felt elevated. Instead of offering the usual juice or sparkling wine as a pre-departure drink, Lufthansa gave passengers a choice between champagne and a signature mocktail. Shortly after boarding, a snack pack was delivered, followed by a moist towel once we were in the air.
The bathrooms were well stocked with toiletries, and the crew was constantly nearby offering drinks and snacks. Their attentiveness made it easy to fully relax and indulge, especially when it came to chocolate. Lufthansa is known for their chocolate, but in business class, it was noticeably higher quality and much more plentiful.
One crew member in particular, Joe, made this flight completely unforgettable.
He noticed me filming and asked about my travels, and I told him I had recently quit my job to travel the world solo. He surprised me with extra chocolate and a beautiful Lufthansa-branded flash drive that isn’t sold commercially. Then, he invited me to sign his personal guestbook, which already included signatures from athletes and public figures. It made me feel like an imposter, but absolutely made my day!
Just when I thought that was the end of the surprises, he handed me an adorable stuffed Lufthansa airplane, which was perfect for my nieces.
For fairness, I didn’t include the extra gifts in my rating. Even without those surprises, I’m still giving Lufthansa’s service a 5 out of 5. It was easily the best service I’ve experienced in business class, rivaled only by Air France.
Final Verdict: Is Lufthansa Business Class Worth It?
Averaging the seat, food, and service scores, my overall rating for Lufthansa business class on this Frankfurt to Detroit flight is 4 out of 5.
The outdated 2-2-2 seat configuration is the clear weakness of this product, but with Lufthansa rolling out newer 1-2-1 layouts on select aircraft, this issue should eventually be resolved.
As for the price, this one-way flight typically costs around $6,000. I booked it using my Capital One Venture X points and paid just 70,000 points plus $220 USD out of pocket. Shoutout to Seats.aero for helping me find this amazing deal!
